Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged Ghanaians to reflect on the evolution of the national currency and contribute to shaping its future as the cedi marks six decades of existence.
Speaking at the Cedi@60 International Conference in Accra, Dr. Asiama noted that the value and symbolism of the cedi have left different impressions on each generation, reflecting the changing economic story of the nation.
“Each generation carries its own memory of the cedi,” he said, stressing that the currency has played a central role in the lives of families, the growth of businesses, and the direction of national economic policy.
The Cedi@60 conference, attended by policymakers, financial experts, and representatives of key institutions, provided a platform to examine the historical performance of the currency, the challenges that have shaped it and the reforms required to secure its stability.
Dr. Asiama highlighted that while the cedi’s journey has been defined by both resilience and setbacks, the next chapter must focus on restoring stronger confidence in the Ghanaian economy.
He encouraged stakeholders to combine innovation, discipline, and strategic planning to ensure that the currency continues to support development and financial inclusion.
He added that envisioning a more stable future for the cedi required collective responsibility from government, businesses and the public.
The Bank of Ghana Governor further emphasised that the institution remained committed to safeguarding monetary stability as the country navigates global and domestic economic pressures.
