Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has publicly filed his annual tax returns, urging Ghanaians to embrace compliance as a civic and moral duty.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Thursday, April 30, Dr. Forson disclosed that he filed the returns together with his deputy, stressing that leadership must be demonstrated through action.
“Leadership must be demonstrated, not declared,” he stated.
The Finance Minister, therefore, commended Ghanaian taxpayers for their consistent contributions to national development, noting that their compliance continues to sustain government operations and drive progress.
“Paying taxes is a shared civic responsibility. It is the foundation of good governance and a cornerstone of national development,” he said.
Dr. Forson emphasized that all citizens, including public officials, professionals, and businesses are equal before the law and must fulfill their tax obligations.
He further described tax compliance as both a legal and moral responsibility, explaining that when citizens pay their fair share, the burden of national development is distributed more equitably.
According to him, tax revenue remains critical in funding essential sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security.
The Minister also commended the Ghana Revenue Authority for its efforts, particularly during the Tax and Good Governance Month observed in April.
“This initiative provides an important platform to educate, engage, and encourage voluntary compliance,” he noted.
Dr. Forson urged the Authority to intensify public education and continue implementing reforms aimed at simplifying tax processes, reducing compliance costs, and improving transparency.
He assured that the Ministry of Finance would continue to support the GRA in delivering on its mandate.
He also encouraged individuals and businesses yet to file their returns to do so promptly, taking advantage of available digital platforms and support systems.
“A strong tax culture strengthens economic stability, deepens accountability, and builds a fairer society,” he concluded.
