There was pandemonium in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital in the early hours of Monday, when hundreds of commercial drivers besieged the Central Business District (CBD) of the capital with their vehicles.

The visibly angry drivers moved their vehicles from the loading points at the Sunyani main lorry station to pick passengers from the road side at the CBD to register their displeasure against the attitude of other colleagues who picked passengers from the road side.

According to the drivers, they did not understand why their other commercial drivers, particularly those who plied Sunyani-Berekum road could load their vehicles or pick passengers from the road side at the CBD enclave in the presence of the police and the city guards instead of loading from the station.

They aggrieved drivers comprise those who load passengers from the Abesim, Fiapre, Dumasua, Dr. Berko, Greenfield, Odumase, and Nsoatre lorry stations, as well as others operating at the Nana Bosoma Central Market.

The action of the drivers created unusual vehicular and human traffic at the CBD for several hours, slowing down economic activities in the CBD.

Outlooks of the J Y Nyamekye enterprise, Atta Drop-in, Twene Amanfo Senior High and Technical School and the Sunyani old taxi rank were the most affected areas

It was however, hectic for the personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the police, and some city guards to control the heavy traffic, and maintain law and order at the enclave.

Some of the aggrieved drivers later told Sompa FM they had made several complaints to authorities at the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, but nothing had been done about the situation.

When contacted, Mr. Douglas Damoah, the Secretary of the Sunyani Taxi Branch of the GPRTU regretted that the dishonest activities of the drivers were affecting those who loaded from the lorry station.
