Director of the Suncity Festival, Ransford Antwi, has raised concerns about the persistent financial and motivational challenges hindering the growth of local musicians (underground artists in Bono region), stressing that the issue is not a lack of talent but a lack of opportunity and support.

Speaking on Sompa Morning Show ‘Ade3 Akye Abia’ hosted by Nana Kwame Owusu Nkwantabisa at Sunyani, Mr. Antwi said many gifted artists remain stagnant simply because they cannot secure paid performances throughout the year.

“If you’re a musician and you couldn’t have a chance to perform on any program for the whole year, then what is the essence of being a musician?” he questioned, emphasizing that without platforms to showcase their work, it becomes difficult for artists to sustain their craft.

Mr. Antwi, who says he has been struggling and working to uplift others since his early twenties, noted that emotional discouragement is another major barrier.

He revealed that behind-the-scenes criticism often undermines the efforts of leaders trying to support the arts community.

“They always talk behind your back about what you’re doing, and if you don’t take care, you will get discouraged from helping,” he said.

He added that while he continuously tries to support emerging artists, the lack of reciprocal effort can be disheartening. “Sometimes I want to help the person, but if they don’t help themselves, how can I help them?” he remarked.

Mr. Antwi recalled instances where individuals he supported never returned or showed appreciation, and others displayed attitudes that made him question whether his investment was worthwhile. Yet he acknowledged that many of these artists are simply “stuck in the middle and need help.”

Highlighting the ongoing efforts to secure support for local talent, Mr. Antwi praised MTN for responding positively to appeals for partnership.

He explained that MTN’s independent events, held across various towns, have made a visible impact—not only by offering performance platforms but also by providing community services such as health screenings in Sunyani and its environs.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Suncity Festival, Ransford Antwi believes that with consistent support, local artists (underground artists) can thrive and meaningfully contribute to the region’s cultural and economic growth.
