The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a public health alert urging Ghanaians to take precautionary measures as the country approaches the dry harmattan season.
Despite recent rains, weather experts anticipate the onset of the dusty, dry period in the coming weeks, prompting health authorities to caution citizens about associated health risks.
According to a statement signed by Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of the GHS, the harmattan season affects nearly every part of the body, making awareness and preventive care essential to reducing illness.
Key Health Risks Highlighted
The press release outlines several major health threats commonly associated with the season:
Skin Problems: Dryness, cracking, and irritation of the skin and lips due to reduced moisture in the air.
Dehydration: Increased water loss from the body caused by dry and windy conditions.
Respiratory Issues: A spike in dust levels can worsen asthma symptoms and increase vulnerability to respiratory infections.
Eye Problems: Irritation and infections may rise due to dusty air and low humidity.
Meningitis: Ghana lies within the African “meningitis belt,” and cases tend to increase during dry periods.
Preventive Measures for the Public
To stay healthy during the season, the GHS recommends the following:
1. Use oil-based moisturizers like shea butter to prevent skin dryness.
2. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
3. Consume water-rich foods, including fruits such as watermelon and soups.
4. Wear face masks in dusty environments to limit inhalation of particles.
5. People with asthma or respiratory conditions should avoid dusty areas and reduce outdoor activities.
6. Protect the eyes using sunglasses or clear protective glasses.
7. Wash hands frequently and avoid touching the face, especially the eyes.
8. Seek prompt medical attention at the nearest health facility if feeling unwell.
The Ministry of Health emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of all Ghanaians throughout the harmattan season and encouraged the public to adhere strictly to the recommended health tips.
The GHS urged media houses to help disseminate the information widely to ensure a safer season for all.
