Some residents of Sunyani have expressed concern over the state of washrooms in public hospitals, attributing the problem not to poor maintenance by cleaners but to the irresponsible behaviour of some users.
Sharing their experience in a phone-in segment with Ama Konadu on ‘Adea Akye Abia’ morning show at Sompa FM-Sunyani, the residents noted that while cleaners carry out their duties diligently, the washrooms are often left untidy shortly after use by some visitors and patients of the health facilities.
“It is not the cleaners who do not do their job well,” Ama Agyeiwaa a resident shared. “The cleaners actually work very hard and keep the washrooms neat. The real problem is with some of the people who use these facilities.”
According to the residents, poor personal hygiene practices by some users contribute significantly to the unpleasant conditions sometimes observed in hospital washrooms.
“Some people lack basic hygiene,” another resident Abiba Farida explained. “After using the washrooms, they refuse to flush or clean the sinks properly, leaving everything dirty for the next person.”
The residents emphasized that such behaviour undermines the efforts of hospital sanitation staff and creates discomfort for other users, including patients who require a clean and safe environment.
They called on hospital visitors to take personal responsibility by using washroom facilities properly and observing basic hygiene practices, stressing that maintaining cleanliness in hospitals is a shared duty.
“Cleanliness in hospitals should be everyone’s concern,” Gideon Asamoah a resident added. “If we all do the right thing, the washrooms will remain neat and safe for everyone.”
