Dr Daniel Gunguni, the Medical Superintendent of the Kwatire Government Hospital in the Bono Region has urged pregnant women to attend the free ‘pregnancy school’ opened at the facility in the Sunyani West Municipality.

He said the school was held twice every month, and urged husbands to endeavour to accompany their wives to attend the school.

Dr Gunguni said the opening of the school followed the increasing cases of maternal and neonatal deaths being recorded in the region, disclosing that 38 cases of maternal mortality were recorded in the Bono region in 2025.

The medical superintendent gave the advice in an interview with Sompa FM on sidelines of the opening of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital at kwatire.

He expressed worry that maternal and neonatal mortalities remained a serious health challenge in the region, despite intensified efforts by the health workers to stem the situation, and called for support from community members to help bring the situation under control.
Mrs Elizabeth Sofaah, the Head of the NICU of the Kwatire Government Hospital highlighted the relevance of setting up the Unit.
