Senior Midwife with Our Lady of Grace Hospital at Breman Asikuma in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District of the Central Region, Midwife Safiatu Ibrahim, has observed menstruation as a normal part of growing in females and that parents, especially fathers must take it upon themselves to provide sanitary materials to protect their girls hygiene and dignity.
Speaking at the International Menstrual Hygiene Day event held at Breman Asikuma, she highlighted that many girls face challenges during that period due to the lack of parental support especially from fathers.
She urged parents to stop treating menstruation as a taboo and to prioritize their children's needs, having chanced on the occasion to donate sanitary pads to students gathered at the event.
“Fathers should not be ashamed to buy sanitary pads for their daughters and teach them how to use it because it's part of their responsibility as parents.”
Speaking to the media, Akyeame Hemaa of the Breman Traditional Area, Nana Efua Kwai, advised parents to make the menstrual hygiene of their girl children a top priority, stressing the importance of supporting young girls with proper menstrual care and education to help them stay healthy and confident.
Some students who turned up for the event also shared their experiences and challenges during their menstrual period with the media, highlighting that the lack of sanitary pads and proper support often makes life difficult for them.
Beneficiaries again expressed appreciation to Midwife Safia for coming to their aid and described the donation of sanitary pads to them as a timely intervention that would positively impact the lives of many teenage girls.
