The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has set an ambitious target of registering 21.08 million members in 2025.
That would represent 62.5 per cent of the country’s population.
Francis Oti Frempong, Director of Membership and Regional Operations at the NHIA, shared this goal as part of the Authority’s broader efforts to expand healthcare financing across the country.
Mr. Frempong noted that several districts and regions have already achieved Universal Health Coverage (UHC) if the threshold is set at a minimum of 80 per cent of their population.
This achievement highlights the steady progress made by the NHIA in its commitment to ensuring accessible healthcare for all Ghanaians.
In addition to general membership growth, the NHIA is also prioritizing the enrollment of indigents, recognizing the critical need to provide healthcare access to society's most vulnerable members.
In 2024, the NHIA successfully registered 3.3 million indigent individuals under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The goal for 2025 is to increase this number to 3.6 million, despite the World Bank recommending a slightly higher target.
“We are still considering the World Bank’s target, but our internal goal for indigent enrollments this year is 3.9 million,” Mr. Frempong stated.
He reiterated the NHIA’s commitment to making healthcare financing more inclusive and ensuring that no Ghanaian is left behind in the journey toward achieving universal health coverage.
To meet these ambitious targets, the NHIA is implementing various strategic initiatives, including community outreach programs, enhanced digital registration processes, and partnerships with key stakeholders.
These efforts aim to streamline the registration process and make it more accessible to citizens, both in urban centers and remote areas
As Ghana continues to work toward achieving Universal Health Coverage, the NHIA remains dedicated to expanding access to quality healthcare through effective policy implementation and an intensified membership drive. The Authority encourages all citizens to enroll in the NHIS and take advantage of its affordable healthcare services.
