The Sunyani Municipal Assembly (SMA) has announced a monthly clean-up exercise to control filth and plastic waste and thereby improve sanitation in the Municipality.

Mr Vincent Antwi Agyei, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive gave the announcement when addressing a news conference in Sunyani, saying the exercise would be organised on the first Saturday of every month beginning from May 10, 2025.

He said the compulsory clean-up exercise was a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to sustain and deepen the re-introduction of the National Sanitation Day by his government.

Mr Agyei explained that the Assembly had prioritised sanitation and proper waste management to "keep Sunyani clean" and thereby stem the outbreak of communicable diseases in the municipality.

He asked the media to contribute to the successes of the exercises by creating public awareness and letting the masses understand the need for environmental cleanliness.

Mr Agyei indicated that major shops, stores and businesses would not be allowed to open between 0600 hours to 1000 hours during the exercises and urged public cooperation.

He said a taskforce would be assigned to round the Municipality, warning that those who failed to close their shops during the period would not be spared.

Mr Agyei said the Assembly had held stakeholder engagement, and it was expecting that everybody would participate in the exercise.
