A senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region Monday implored various aspirants and their following to rescind their decision to contest the party's presidential primaries for Election 2028.

The leadership of the largest opposition NPP has opened nominations for its highly anticipated presidential primaries, scheduled for Saturday January 31, 2026 Specifically, Mr Mensah asked Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Mr Bryan Acheampong and Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong to step down for the former Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the supreme interest of the party in winning the Election 2028.

Speaking in an interview with Sompa FM Odomase, the Sunyani West constituency capital, Mr Mensah, 75 years old said the NPP would be more formidable only if the rank and file allowed the party's interest to supersede their political ambitions.

He said: "The surest way we can win the Election 2028 is to reconfigures our minds, build consensus and maintain the candidature of the former Vice President as our flagbearer", warning that it would be "politically suicidal if our delegates mistakenly disallowed Alhaji Dr Bawumia another chance". Mr Mensah emphasized that "as a strong party under the great elephant", the NPP cherished to preserve, uphold, defend and consolidate the gains of its internal structures and constitutional and democratic principles.

However, he added that "In the supreme interest of our party and to win the Election 2028, we must maintain and support Alhaji Dr Bawumia to send us to the Jubilee House again". Mr Mensah reminded that "stepping down for a winnable candidate like Bawumia is not a defeat but a good better reason to build on our electoral chances in the 2028 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections".
