The Acting Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), has initiated legal steps to revoke Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 and its amendment, L.I. 2501, as part of renewed efforts to curb illegal mining.
In a letter to the Office of the Attorney General, signed by the head of the Public Affairs Department, Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, the Minister called for the immediate annulment of the instruments, stressing that the move will help unify Ghana’s mining regulatory framework.
According to him, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) already provides strong and sufficient guidelines to oversee mining operations.
He believes consolidating regulations under the EPA will ensure strict adherence to environmental and social standards while promoting responsible mining practices.
The Minister said the action is a decisive measure aimed at halting the massive environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, particularly the pollution of water bodies and the destruction of forest reserves.
