The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Central Region with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and environmental health officers have engaged street food vendors in Cape Coast in a day training on food safety practices.

The engagement by FDA and FAO commensurate with the region's celebration of the world food safety day earmarked for celebration in June with the theme, "Food Safety: Science in Action."

The training which saw the participation of over 50 street food vendors in Cape Coast on Monday, aims to educate food sellers on what makes food unsafe in other to guard against foodborne diseases by drawing attention to the use of scientific knowledge as key to reducing illness, cutting costs and saving lives through foods they offer to the public.

Madam Francisca Anokye, the Central Regional FDA Director, admonished individuals who sells food on the street to prioritize personal hygiene by keeping their surroundings, particularly where they sell in a clean condition in other not to offer contaminated or poisoned food to the public, else will have the law to deal with.

She observed that the training seeks to sanitize the region as means to have safer foods for public consumption in promotion of good health.

Some food vendors who had the opportunity to attend the training, shared excitement towards the engagement which they described very insightful, having gained a lot to strictly guide their adherence to food safety practices.

They, however, implored FDA to frequently organize such refresher programs to constantly deliberate with them on the practices required of them so far as food safety is concern.
