The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Central Region has charged teachers in the region to see to it that food sold or served in schools are wholesome and hygienic enough for students consumption.
According to FDA, it beholds on teachers as stakeholders to health promotion to act as agents of change to safe food at various schools for an improved academic performance among students.
FDA made this remarks following a day training offered School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinators in the Cape Coast Metropolis in the Central Region of Ghana with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations on food safety on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
The forum which offered teachers a platform for education, suggestions and an opportunity to seek answers to disturbing issues bordering street food vendor regularization and certification of school food vendors from FDA and FAO officers in attendance at the event, mark the region's observance to the 'world food safety day', earmarked for celebration in June themed, "Food Safety: Science in Action."
Teachers at the gathering were trained on the five (5) keys to safer foods and how to help prevent the spread of foodborne diseases in schools by merely applying the food safety keys.
Speaking to the media after the engagement, Ms. Francisca Abena Asubonteng Anokye, the FDA Central Regional Director shared optimism that the training offered SHEP Coordinators in the Cape Coast Metropolis will contribute in enhancing students adherence to food safety precautions as means to drastically tackle foodborne illnesses in schools.
Addressing food safety as a collective effort, the FDA Director reached out to all and sundry to play their bit in ensuring a food safety environment.
"Food safety isn't just the responsibility of the food vendor or FDA, but a requirement for the general public to adhere in ensuring a healthy society by embracing the practice of hand washing and ensuring that food and water consumed daily are under hygienic conditions," Ms. Anokye stated.
Some SHEP Coordinators who couldn't hide their joy and positives gained from the training, commended FDA for the opportunity to augment their knowledge on food safety but required that more of such programs be organized often to have their capacity regularly improved on health centered issues.
