The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Interior, is set to roll out a Gun Amnesty Programme aimed at reducing the growing number of illegal firearms circulating in the country.

The initiative, announced by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), forms part of new measures to tackle gun-related crimes and ensure public safety.

According to NACSA, the gun amnesty will give anyone in possession of an unregistered or illicit firearm the opportunity to surrender it freely without fear of arrest, prosecution, or questioning.

The aim, the Commission says, is to encourage voluntary disarmament and promote peace across communities.

“No questions will be asked, no charges will be pressed, just freedom and peace offered to all,” the Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr. Adam A. A. Bonaa, said in a statement issued on Monday, 27 October 2025.

He explained that illicit firearms have increasingly found their way into homes, markets, and even funerals, turning peaceful gatherings into violent confrontations.

The Commission says the amnesty will be supported by the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to ensure smooth and safe collection of the surrendered weapons.

Dr. Bonaa urged Ghanaians to take advantage of the upcoming programme to hand over all unregistered weapons and help make Ghana safer.

“When you surrender your gun, you are not giving up power; you are reclaiming peace. You are saying ‘No’ to gun crime, ‘No’ to gun violence, and ‘Yes’ to Ghana,” the statement added.
