Asantehene Concludes Final Mediation Meeting on Bawku Chieftaincy Crisis

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has wrapped up his mediation efforts in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute following a face-to-face meeting with the two contending factions at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi.

A 30-member delegation led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount

Chief of Tarana Traditional Area and spokesperson for the Nayiri, represented Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Nayiri and Overlord of Mamprugu and the Mamprusi people.

On the Kusasi side, Naba Tambis Baalug, Paramount Chief of Pusiga, led the delegation representing the Bawku Naaba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and the Kusasi community. Former MP Cletus Avoka acted as spokesperson for the Kusasi group, while Dr. Issah spoke for the Nayiri and Mamprusi. 

The delegations included chiefs, lawyers, academics, opinion leaders, and youth representatives.

Cordial Engagement after Months of Dialogue

According to the Manhyia Palace, the final joint meeting followed months of separate engagements where both factions presented their positions. Otumfuo brought both sides together to speak directly in a final push toward a lasting resolution of the long-standing conflict.

Officials described the atmosphere as cordial, with His Majesty emphasizing the shared identity of the people and the need to end hostilities.

Otumfuo Urges Communities to Reject Violence

The Asantehene commended both sides for their maturity throughout the process and reminded them that regardless of the mediation outcome, they must learn to peacefully coexist as brothers and sisters. 

He encouraged the leaders to prepare their supporters to reject violence and work toward restoring peace within their communities.

Report to Be Submitted to President Mahama

Otumfuo announced that he will submit his final report and recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days. 

He expressed hope that the President would act swiftly and convene a formal meeting with all stakeholders to communicate the way forward.
