The Government of Ghana has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to popular American internet personality Darren Watkins Jr., widely known as IShowSpeed, following what officials describe as confirmation of his “irrefutable ties” to the country.
The announcement was made on social media post by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Tuesday January 27, who stated that the approval came after discussions with creative entrepreneur Wode Maya and subsequent confirmation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Ablakwa, the decision reflects Ghana’s recognition of IShowSpeed’s connection to the country and his growing role in promoting Ghana and Africa on the global stage.
“I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to IShowSpeed,” Ablakwa wrote, describing the streamer as a worthy ambassador for the nation.
IShowSpeed, one of the world’s most influential digital creators, commands a massive global audience through his live streams and social media content.
His recent engagement with Ghana and broader African culture has drawn significant attention online, particularly among young audiences.
In his statement, Ablakwa also noted that both IShowSpeed and Wode Maya had previously been granted diplomatic passports, underscoring what he described as Ghana’s appreciation for their efforts in projecting a positive image of the country and the African continent internationally.
The development highlights Ghana’s continued efforts to engage the African diaspora and leverage cultural and digital diplomacy to promote national identity, tourism, and global visibility.
“For God, Country and Continent,” Ablakwa concluded.
