The Physician Assistant at the Fiapre Health Centre, Patience Anima Agyei, has raised concerns about severe space constraints at the facility, warning that the situation is affecting patient care, especially maternity services.
Speaking to Sompa FM reporter, Nana Oppong Daddie, Madam Anima explained that the health centre, despite being classified as a model facility, lacks adequate infrastructure to function effectively.
“Our facility is too small. We don’t really have wards. What we use as wards are actually bedrooms that have been converted,” she said. “Each room contains only three beds for admission.”
According to her, the limited space becomes a major challenge when multiple women go into labour at the same time, often forcing health workers to refer patients to other facilities.
“When two or three women deliver at the same time, it becomes very difficult for us unless we do a referral. This is because we don’t have enough space,” she noted. “Even when we get additional beds, there is nowhere to put them.”
Madam Anima, therefore, appealed to traditional leaders, government authorities, and other stakeholders to support the construction of a storey building to serve as wards, explaining that the facility lacks sufficient land to expand horizontally.
“We are pleading with our leaders to help us build a storey building to be used as wards because we don’t have enough land space to build separate structures,” she said.
She further expressed concern that although the health centre is considered a model facility, it does not have the resources to justify that status.
“At the moment, we are called a model health centre, but we don’t have the necessary resources to make it a proper model centre,” she stated.
While acknowledging government support over the years, Madam Anima emphasized the need for greater community involvement.
“The government has really done a lot for us, but we also need individuals within the community to come and help,” she said.
She also revealed that some natives of Fiapre living abroad had begun constructing washroom facilities for the centre but have been unable to complete the project after several years.
“Those washrooms are still incomplete. We now want to convert them into offices, so we are appealing for support to help us complete and repurpose them,” she added.
The appeal highlights ongoing challenges faced by health facilities in growing communities and the urgent need for collaborative support to improve healthcare delivery at the local level.
