The Twafourhene of the Atebubu Traditional Area, Nana Ofori Yeboah, has called on the government to empower teachers with the necessary authority to appropriately discipline students in schools.

According to him, indiscipline among students in many schools has increased in recent years due to the limited authority teachers currently have to correct wrongdoing.

Speaking on behalf of the Atebubu Manhene during a grand durbar held to mark Ghana Independence Day, Nana Ofori Yeboah urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to restore teachers’ authority to discipline students as was practiced in the past.

“Teachers must be empowered to discipline students appropriately. When teachers do not have the authority to correct wrongdoing, indiscipline will continue to grow in our schools,” he stated.

The durbar formed part of activities marking Ghana’s 69th Independence Day celebration in Atebubu in the Bono East Region.

Nana Ofori Yeboah emphasized that the youth represent the future of the country and warned that allowing them to engage in misconduct without proper guidance and correction could negatively affect national development.

“The youth are the future of this country. If we allow them to grow without proper discipline and guidance, it will affect the development of our nation,” he added.

The Twafourhene also expressed concern about the increasing involvement of some young people in the abuse of hard drugs and alcohol, as well as the misuse of social media platforms to insult national leaders and elders.

He therefore called for collective efforts from parents, teachers, and community leaders to instill discipline and responsible behavior among the youth.
