Twelve firefighters have sustained injuries following an explosion while battling a petrol tanker fire at Gomoa Potsin, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.
According to a press release issued on March 17, 2026, the incident occurred after emergency crews responded to a distress call at about 5:58 a.m. reporting a tanker fire along the Winneba–Accra Highway.
Firefighters from Apam and Kasoa were dispatched to the scene, supported by a private water tanker.

Upon arrival, personnel encountered a fully developed blaze involving a tanker carrying approximately 54,000 litres of petrol, with flames spreading rapidly to nearby properties. The driver and his mate escaped unharmed.
The GNFS said the fire was brought under control by 7:58 a.m. and fully extinguished by 8:42 a.m. However, during cooling operations to prevent re-ignition, the tanker suddenly exploded, injuring twelve firefighters.
“During cooling operations aimed at preventing re-ignition and possible secondary explosions, the tanker reignited and subsequently exploded,” the statement said.
Out of the injured, four sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, while one was treated at the Potsin Polyclinic.

The remaining eight received on-site treatment for minor injuries. Authorities say all severely injured personnel have since been treated and discharged.
Central Regional Fire Commander, ACFO I Merinder Mary Attigah Mensah, visited the victims and assured them of management’s commitment to their recovery.
The GNFS noted that the cause of the fire remains under investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property.
