A special court session was held at the Sunyani Central Prison on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as part of Ghana’s Justice for All Program, an initiative aimed at reducing prison congestion and ensuring speedy access to justice for remand inmates. The session was facilitated by the Legal Aid commission.

In total, nineteen (19) inmates were presented before the court. At the end of the proceedings, four (4) inmates were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment, while eight (8) others were granted bail. One inmate had his bail application refused.

Additionally, four (4) cases were struck out by the court, and two (2) inmates were referred to a psychiatric hospital for further assessment and treatment. Thirty-one (31) inmates whose warrants had expired, have been renewed for 2 weeks to appear in court on 9th April,2026.

The Justice for All Program since its inception in 2007 continues to play a crucial role in addressing delays in the judicial process and protecting the rights of individuals held in custody for prolonged periods. Over the past 19 years, the programme has impacted on the remand population in the prisons, bringing it down from 30.57% in 2007 to 12.23% currently.
