The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat,(NAIMOS) has taken a step forward by officially handing over a remarkable total of 100 highly efficient water pumping machines to the National Service Scheme (NSS), a gesture that aims to bolster agricultural production under the government’s ambitious and commendable “Feed Ghana” initiative.
These machines, which were confiscated during various anti-illegal mining operations designed to combat the detrimental impacts of unauthorized mining activities, are now being thoughtfully repurposed for agricultural use rather than being left idle and unused, thus converting a potential liability into a resource for the community.
During the presentation of this vital equipment, Colonel Dominic Buah, the Director of Operations at NAIMOS, spoke on behalf of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
He emphasized that this action aligns seamlessly with the Minister’s overarching vision of transforming confiscated mining equipment into something beneficial and productive. “Having removed these gadgets from the field, there’s definitely a positive use for them, and that’s what we call repurposing,” Col. Buah articulated with conviction.
He further expressed excitement upon receiving a formal request from the National Service Scheme regarding the pumping machines, highlighting that the alignment of NSS’s plans with the Minister’s vision of repurposing these machines to contribute to the national goal of food self-sufficiency is particularly fulfilling.
“We were excited because it is the Minister’s vision that these machines should be repurposed to feed Ghana. We read that you are going to use them for farming, which sits directly with that vision,” he added, underscoring the significance of this initiative.
Additionally, Col. Buah mentioned that although the Minister and Deputy Minister would have liked to personally present the equipment, they were unfortunately preoccupied with other important national duties. “So on behalf of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and NAIMOS, we wish to present these 100 water pumping machines to you for the purpose of farming to feed Ghana,” he stated during the emotionally charged handover ceremony.
In response to this generous donation, the Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Ms. Ruth Dela Seddoh, expressed her heartfelt appreciation while receiving the machines. She articulated that the NSS plans to strategically deploy the newly acquired pumps into various agricultural projects, with the overarching goal of significantly boosting food production and ultimately reducing Ghana’s reliance on food imports, which has been a longstanding challenge faced by the nation.
The act of repurposing seized mining equipment is not only a singular initiative but also forms part of the government’s broader strategy to effectively tackle the complex issue of illegal mining while simultaneously channeling recovered assets into national development programs that are designed to uplift communities and enhance food security throughout the country.
