Mr Frank Kwabena Adu, the Wenchi District Manager of the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) in the Bono Region has expressed concern about the rising practice of minors, riding motorcycles and tricycles (Pragyia) for commercial purposes.
He emphasised that it was an offence for owners to allow unlicensed riders or minors to use their motorbikes or tricycles, explaining that in such cases both the owners of the motorbikes and the unlicensed riders would be prosecuted accordingly.
In an interview with the media at Wenchi, Mr Adu warned that offenders would be prosecuted under the Section 42 of the Road Traffic Regulation (LI 2180) which imposed punitive sanctions on the offenders.
He said the trend was worrying: "What was once regarded as unlawful and socially unacceptable is now viewed as normal".
Mr Adu cautioned owners of tricycles and motorbikes to ensure that only licensed riders used their machines for commercial purposes or prepared to face the full rigours of the law.
He also called on traditional authorities and politicians to allow the law to work by ensuring that they desisted from interfering in the enforcement of the law.
