The Municipal Chief Executive for Suame Municipality in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Frank Owusu Ansah, has cut sod for the construction of a 24-hour model market project at Anomangye. The event was attended by assembly members, market queens, traders, and other stakeholders who have been pushing for the reconstruction of the market since it was gutted by fire.
It will be recalled that the Anomangye market was burnt beyond recognition and has since remained in ruins while traders struggled to find alternative spaces to sell their goods. The destruction left many traders counting their losses and forced customers to travel outside the community for basic goods. The new 24-hour model market is therefore set to be built on the same site where the fire destroyed the old market, bringing renewed hope for traders who have been waiting patiently for rebuilding.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, Hon. Frank Owusu Ansah said the project will include modern facilities such as a kindergarten, police station, and restaurants to serve traders and shoppers. He explained that the 24-hour design is intentional to support traders who work late and to boost economic activity in the area around the clock. The MCE added that adequate security, sanitation, and drainage systems will also be incorporated to prevent future fire outbreaks and flooding that often affect markets.
He assured the traders that the assembly is committed to delivering a market that meets modern standards and will improve their livelihoods. Hon. Frank Owusu Ansah further assured that traders who were affected by the fire will be allocated stores after the completion of the 24-hour economy market to ensure they are not left out of the new development.
Meanwhile, Hon. Elvis Nyantakyi, popularly known as Yesmadam, also spoke at the ceremony and highlighted the importance of the market.
He said the project will be highly beneficial to traders and residents, as it will create jobs, improve safety, and strengthen commerce in Anomangye and surrounding communities once completed.
