Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has deployed thugs to the Akwatia constituency to intimidate voters, despite warnings from the Police.
Voters in Akwatia are casting their ballots today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of Ernest Kumi.
To ensure a peaceful exercise, more than 5,000 police officers have been deployed across the constituency.
However, Mr. Tanko claimed the NPP does not trust the Police, citing events during the Ablekuma North by-election re-run, and has allegedly resorted to sending in its own operatives.
“We just had an intelligence this morning, it won’t be long, you will hear the stuff. We will arrest them, they will be rounded up, we are on their heels… The NPP has brought some thugs, put them in some location, and national security is on their heels.”
He assured voters that the Police and national security are closely monitoring the situation and would act swiftly to prevent any disruptions.
“It won’t be long, they will be rounded up, all of them. Nobody is going to be allowed to intimidate anybody here. Allow the voters to do their work.”
Mr. Tanko further urged constituents to turn out in their numbers and vote for the NDC, emphasizing that the security agencies were fully committed to protecting them.
The Akwatia by-election is being contested by Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, with more than 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots across 119 polling stations.
