The race for the national chairmanship of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is heating up, and already, explosive claims are being made about the party’s future.
Mr. Ebo Buckman, a leading member of the Movement for Change and a former member of the NPP, has issued a dire warning: the NPP will completely collapse if former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, is not handed the chairmanship position when the party goes to the polls in January 2026.
Appearing on “For God and Country”, the hard-hitting socio-political show on Sompa 106.5 FM hosted by Prof. Kobla Abochie, Mr Buckman on Monday, September 22 described the NPP as “headless and lawless” and said only Agyarko has what it takes to rescue the party from sinking into irrelevance.
“The NPP in its current state has become a headless and lawless party. You need someone who was in the labour room when the party was born, and Boakye Agyarko was in that labour room. He has compassion and a special love for the party", Mr Buckman charged.
The NPP, in line with its constitution, is preparing to elect a new national chairman next year.
The contest is expected to feature heavyweights such as Mr. Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. John Boadu, former General Secretary, and other stalwarts. But Mr. Buckman insists the choice is clear.
“Where the party is now, they need somebody who loves the party, who cannot be influenced by money, who is mature enough to steer the affairs of the party.
Boakye Agyarko has the experience, the maturity, the leadership skills, the communication skills—everything the NPP needs to rise again from this current state of collapse,” he declared.
With the stakes so high, and the party’s grassroots closely watching, Buckman’s comments have injected fresh fire into what promises to be one of the most decisive and bruising internal contests in NPP’s history.
