Parliament has approved Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana through a headcount.

‎This decision was made after Members of Parliament took turns to debate the report of the Appointments Committee on the Justice’s vetting.

‎The Majority Caucus who were in favour of approving the nominee had 163 votes, while the Minority Caucus had 69 votes on the Motion to adopt the report of the Committee.

‎Presenting the report of the Appointments Committee to the House, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor noted that by Majority decision, the Committee recommends to the House the approval of the nominee.

‎He said the nominee demonstrated outstanding competence, knowledge of the law, and a firm grasp of judicial ethics, stressing that he addressed questions posed to him with professionalism, clarity and intellectual rigor.

‎“The Committee is satisfied that the nominee possesses the requisite qualifications, judicial temperament and commitment to constitutional values expected of Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana” he stated.

‎The Chairman of the Committee also made the House aware that all the Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) opposed the nomination of the Chief Justice nominee and subsequently walked out of the vetting proceedings.

‎The walkout was after the preliminary remarks of the Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
