The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem Central, Kwame Anyimadu, has stated that investigating allegations of vote buying and vote selling does not fall within the mandate of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

He expressed concerns over calls for the OSP to probe allegations of vote buying and the sources of funding for items distributed during political campaigns.

Speaking with the host, Ama Konadu in an interview on ‘Adea Akye Abia’ morning show at Sompa Fm-Sunyani, Hon. Anyimadu said the OSP is not the appropriate body to handle such matters, as there are designated committees responsible for addressing electoral misconduct and related issues.

Meanwhile, the MP stressed that vote buying has become a worrying phenomenon in Ghana’s electoral process and must be tackled decisively.

He suggested that one effective way to curb the practice is for the state to provide financial support to political parties during elections.

“It is about time we stop vote buying,” he said, adding that state sponsorship of political parties could help reduce the financial pressures that often lead to the practice.

Hon. Anyimadu reiterated the need for reforms to ensure transparency and fairness in the country’s electoral system.

However, the Asante Akyem Central MP was not surprised to hear that Baba Jamal is contesting in the upcoming by-election.
