President John Dramani Mahama is set to officially launch Ghana’s landmark Free Primary Health Care Programme today, Wednesday, April 15, 2026, in a major step toward expanding access to affordable healthcare nationwide.
The event, scheduled for 10:00 AM at the Shai Osudoku District Hospital, is expected to mark a turning point in the country’s efforts to strengthen its primary healthcare system and move closer to achieving universal health coverage.
The initiative is designed to remove financial barriers to basic healthcare services, ensuring that all Ghanaians, particularly those in underserved and rural communities can access essential medical care without cost at the point of service.
Government officials say the programme will focus on preventive care, early diagnosis, and treatment of common illnesses, while also improving maternal and child health services.
It is further expected to ease the burden on secondary and tertiary health facilities by strengthening community-level healthcare delivery.
The launch underscores the government’s renewed commitment to healthcare reform and aligns with broader national and global goals of equitable access to quality health services.
Health sector stakeholders, local authorities, and community members are expected to attend the ceremony, which will formally introduce the policy framework and implementation strategy of the programme.
