President John Dramani Mahama has paid glowing tribute to the late Jerry John Rawlings by officially renaming the National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters in his honor and unveiling a memorial bust to celebrate his legacy.
Speaking at the historic ceremony, President Mahama described Rawlings as a transformational leader whose commitment to probity, accountability, social justice, patriotism, and service to the people helped shape Ghana's democratic journey.
Mahama revealed that he had initially been concerned about whether the bust would accurately reflect the image of the late statesman.
However, upon its unveiling, those present, including members of the Rawlings family, expressed satisfaction with the monument, describing it as a fitting tribute to the former President.
Addressing party executives, government officials, traditional leaders, Members of Parliament, party activists, and invited guests, President Mahama emphasized that the event was not merely about renaming a building or unveiling a monument, but about preserving history and honoring the sacrifices of a leader whose vision continues to inspire generations.
He noted that Rawlings dedicated his life to empowering ordinary Ghanaians, promoting accountability in public life, and building a nation founded on fairness, justice, and opportunity.
According to the President, naming the party's headquarters after Rawlings serves as a reminder that leadership is ultimately about service and that political power must always be exercised in the interest of the people.
"The values he championed — integrity, patriotism, sacrifice, courage, discipline, and service — must continue to guide our actions as a party and government," Mahama stated.
The President described the NDC headquarters as the operational heart of the party, where ideas are debated, policies formulated, and strategies developed to advance the party's mission of serving the Ghanaian people.
He added that embedding Rawlings' name into the institution ensures that future generations of party members will never lose sight of the principles and sacrifices that laid the foundation of the party.
President Mahama further noted that monuments around the world are erected not only to honor individuals but also to preserve the ideals they represent.
He said the memorial bust of Rawlings would serve as a lasting symbol of his contributions to Ghana and the NDC.
Concluding his remarks, Mahama congratulated the National Chairman, General Secretary, Council of Elders, and all members of the NDC for organizing the event.
He expressed hope that the newly named Jerry John Rawlings Headquarters would remain a symbol of unity, service, patriotism, and dedication to the people of Ghana, while continuing to inspire future generations through the enduring legacy of the party's founder.
