OSP to assess three petitions over Afenyo-Markin extortion allegations

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has revealed that it has received three petitions in connection with allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

‎According to the OSP, it had received a joint petition submitted by two persons, as well as two separate petitions from other individuals, all relating to the allegations.

‎In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, the anti-corruption agency said it had taken note of the public allegations and would assess the case to determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate.

‎The OSP said it would also determine whether further investigative action is warranted after assessing the case.

‎The development follows claims by Mr Gyamfi, who accused Mr Afenyo-Markin of extortion. The Minority Leader has since denied the allegation and indicated that he intends to take legal action against the GoldBod CEO. The controversy comes amid a public dispute between the two over claims of GH¢22 billion in losses, equivalent to about US$1.7 billion, allegedly associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.

‎Meanwhile, the United Party has petitioned the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security agencies to investigate allegations of extortion against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

‎The petition was filed by the party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah.
