A severe thunderstorm has triggered a landslide in the Akokora Kwadwo area of Sunyani in the Bono Region, causing fear and panic among residents in the community.
The incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, following heavy rainfall and a thunderstorm in the area. The landslide leaving residents shocked by the extent of the damage.
Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident, although residents say they remain worried about their safety, particularly if heavy rainfall continues.
Speaking to Sompa FM during a visit to the affected area, one of the victims, Ante Asana, said she was at home when she suddenly heard a strange sound coming from the back of their house.
According to her, she initially thought the sound was from a vehicle that had blown its horn. However, upon further investigation, they realized that a landslide had occurred behind their house.
She explained that the incident happened at a location where a man had a house, but fortunately, the man was not around at the time of the incident. She added that, despite the destruction caused by the landslide, residents are safe.
The incident has raised concerns among residents, who fear that further rainfall could worsen the situation and cause additional damage to homes and properties in the area.
The affected residents are therefore appealing to the government, the municipal authorities, NADMO and other relevant agencies to urgently intervene, assess the extent of the damage and provide the necessary support to affected families.
