The Ghana Union of Traders' Association (GUTA) has voiced its surprise and dismay at the recent announcement of significant increases in port tariffs by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
According to GUTA, its members are already grappling with the adverse effects of numerous taxes and levies introduced in recent times, coupled with the prevailing economic challenges in the country. Given these circumstances, GUTA finds it unexpected that the GPHA would implement such astronomical tariff hikes.
Furthermore, GUTA pointed out that the Ghanaian port authorities themselves have previously expressed concerns about low traffic at the country's ports, mainly due to the high cost of doing business. Under these circumstances, the decision to introduce substantial tariff increases could exacerbate the situation, leading to further challenges for businesses operating through the ports.
In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, GUTA urged the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to reconsider and suspend the implementation of these new tariffs, especially considering that it comes just a year after the last tariff increase. Instead, GUTA is calling for meaningful engagement with stakeholders to discuss the potential adverse impacts of these hikes on businesses and the economy as a whole.
GUTA emphasised that such tariff increases may also trigger a chain reaction, leading to corresponding rises in shipping line charges, further burdening traders and businesses.
As an association representing traders in Ghana, GUTA believes that a collaborative approach involving all relevant stakeholders is crucial to finding a balanced and sustainable solution that would not compound the already high cost of doing business in the country.
GUTA urged the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to take into account the concerns raised by businesses and suspend the implementation of the new tariffs until a comprehensive consultation with stakeholders can be conducted to assess the potential impacts and explore alternatives.
