Inspirational gospel artist, Mr. Mark Anim Yirenkyi, has underscored the need for Africans to believe in themselves and create an environment that respect nature, creation, and self-esteem in order to decolonize themselves from colonial mentality.
On “Na mennim” social program with host Tofiakwa on Sompa FM in Kumasi and monitored by sompaonline.com, the Adventist singer said, self-esteem is mostly influenced by social relations with family, friends and community in one’s country of origin.
The musician, who has more than ten career albums spanning over two decades, stressed that the belief that racial discrimination accounts for low self-recognition among blacks was untrue but rather, it was due to our own poor sense of upbringing.
He told the host, “Tofi, we the Africans have fallen short of accepting to be who we truly are, you see, self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves; it is based on our opinion and beliefs about us which makes it difficult for us to change for the better. You ask yourself where does this self-esteem come from.
He continued during the interview that, “We are still under their influences, they seized our greatest weapons, which is our ability to think as blacks, we no longer value ourselves, people look down on fellow blacks as slaves, we have thrown away our traditions, beliefs, and even lost our morals. Wakeup Africa”.
