Drivers plying the road from Kejetia to Barekesse, Abrepo junction to Ohwim, Amanfrom, and its surrounding enclave have demonstrated against the government today, November 2, 202 at Asuofia taxi rank.
The drivers’ union threw a reminder to members of the general public that it intended to embark on a demonstration over the fuel price hikes in the country if the government does not do anything about it.
According to the leader, Mr. Domfe Johnson, passengers are fighting drivers over transport increment, a situation he describes as worried.
“The passengers have been fighting us, very worrying, the roads are bad, the fuel increment is something we can't bear any longer, and this situation is unacceptable, he said.
The demonstrators blocked the main stretch road from Barekesse, Asuofia, and Abrepo junction, burning tires to register their displeasure over the dilapidated roads, fuel increment, and transport fare increment.
Mr. Domfe said “There has been the need for the demonstration because the transport business is collapsing due to rampant increment of fuel, lubricants, and spare parts.
He said drivers continue to lose their job because they can't make daily sales.
“Many drivers have become jobless because they can’t make their daily sales to their car owners; hence the cars have to be retrieved by the owners.
The assemblyman for the area, Hon Osei Kwaku Michael said he had no idea about the demonstration.
“What you are witnessing is very worrying, unfortunately, I had no clue about this demonstration, we could have stopped them but we woke up to it.
A driver who spoke to this portal said they are going through hardship and need intervention from the government.
“The economic hardship has bred confusion between us and our clients, especially with the increment in fares.
Timely intervention from the police ensured lives and properties are protected.
“The police came here to protect lives and properties, no one was injured or any property destroyed, it was a harmless and peaceful demonstration, he said.
