The student leadership of the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) honors the Commissioner-General, Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, with a citation for his immense contributions and efforts on behalf of students towards national development.
Miss Emily Jemima Nyarko, the GUPS President, said the Union is pleased with the Commissioner-General’s good work so far, especially with the introduction of new tax policies that have improved the collection of revenue, such as the integrated customs management system (ICUMS), Filling out tax returns electronically via the Ghana.gov platform, introduction of the cashless system, taxation of high-net-worth individuals, Restructuring of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD) into area offices and taxpayer service centers, Replacement of the Ghana Card Personal Identification Number (Ghana Card PIN) as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individuals, introduction of new excise tax stamps, Rigorous efforts to taxpayers in the e-commerce industry include embarking on intensive debt collection drives, the prosecution of tax defaulters, and the Tax Education Initiative.
The leadership of the union pledged to offer their support to help GRA mobilize revenue at the tertiary level since they have about three million students in both public and private universities.
The union, through its president, also presented a three-page proposal to the Commissioner General on the inclusion of taxation in our curriculum from basic school to tertiary school to educate our future taxpayers on tax. This is what the union believes will imprint the spirit of nationalism for the development of Ghana through robust revenue generation.
In his acceptance speech, the Commissioner-General commended the leadership of the Ghana Union of Professional Students for their kindness gesture and the honor of presenting him with a citation. He stated that this tells him people are observing his footprints, which will make him do more for GRA with his colleagues.
