Former High Commissioner to the UK, Victor Emmanuel Smith is rooting for the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo to be kept at the post. According to him, he believes the incumbent Chairman can lead the party to win the 2024 presidential election with proficiency and political rich experience.
The National Democratic Congress - NDC goes to the polls this weekend at the Accra Sports Stadium to elect National Officers for the party.
the former Eastern Regional minister revealed in an interview with Sompa news that Mr. Aseidu Nketiah refused to listen to former President John Mahama when he advised him to abandon his plans to run for the National Chairmanship position.
“We had plans to go to the polls with the same team especially the leadership with John Dramani as the Flagbearer, Ofusu Ampofo as the chairman, and Asiedu Nketia should have remained where he was as the general secretary and Akamba as the organizer, so when Asiedu Nketia called me one weekend that he wants to go for the chairmanship position, I advised him as my good friend not to go ahead with his intentions because it tends to create a negative fallout when such things happen especially behind John Mahama but it fell on dead ears.
He continues to say that the former president, John Dramani Mahama also spoke to Asiedu Nketia to hold on with the move but also fell on dead ears.
“John Mahama also spoke with him and even invited them before the council of elders but none of them was fruitful, it's not as if he can't execute his job but ideally we wanted everyone to remain at the post to have a stronger team to capture power but Asiedu Nketia turned down the advice everyone gave him including my little self, he told Omanhene.
Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo on Saturday, December 17, 2022, will face a keen contest with Johnson Asiedu Nketiah for the NDC’s Chairmanship position.
The former ambassador said Asiedu Nketia has let the party down by revealing to the public things that he has sworn an oath of secrecy.
“The way he's going about his campaign as a general secretary is not pleasing to many of us, especially the council of elders, because you can't be saying things you have sworn an oath of secrecy to the public, at least there should be decency in your campaigns, we are not happy with the way he's going by his campaign,” he stressed.
The former Diplomat, Mr. Victor Smith also called on the National Youth Organizer of the party and National communications officer of the party to cease fire as the National Executive Council of the Party will be meeting them today.
“Admittedly, what is going on is not right, especially yesterday, the council of elders is meeting to address the issue between the two and call them together, the former president is also doing his part to bring peace between the two,” he said.
He called on the delegates to rally support for the incumbent chairman Ofosu Ampofo and vote massively for him.
