The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has charged the Ashanti Regional coordinating council to ensure fair allocation of the stores and stalls to traders at the redeveloped Kumasi central market.
He asked the regional minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah to adhere to the modalities agreed on in the allocation exercise to ensure that displaced traders were catered for first.
The Asantehene made the call during the last meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs in Kumasi earlier today, 15th of December 2022.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the commencement of the second phase of the redevelopment of the Kumasi Central Market, the largest open space market in West Africa in May 2019. and expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.
Chiefs in the Ashanti Region who have had their lands invaded by illegal miners will be summoned by the Asantehene for questioning and possible sanctions.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II says chiefs should not sit aloof while illegal mining activities ravage arable farmlands and water bodies.
