We’ll Resist Illegal Public Universities Fee Increment – NUGS
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has vowed to resist any attempt by some public universities to increase their fees beyond the proposed 15% threshold.
The union has raised concern that some universities have taken advantage of the 15% increment of fees approved by Parliament to overcharge students.
Mr. Dennis Appiah Larbi Ampofo The President of the Student Union in an interview with Sompa News said they are going to do everything humanly and legally possible to fight the unapproved charges of the universities.
The union, therefore, called on all institutions that have illegally increased fees beyond the threshold to reverse such increments immediately.
The Union has embarked on a series of meetings with stakeholders to help fight the excessive charges on public universities. According to the union, in Compliance with the 15% threshold approved by parliament, NUGS proposes that GTEC writes to all institutions AGAIN to emphasize complaints.
NUGS and Blocs have set up a mechanism to monitor and report all defaulting institutions that are charging over the threshold to Parliament and GTEC.
NUCS proposes that GTEC directs all public institutions to
accept 50% part payment and allow students to register.
ALL PUBLIC TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS (i.e public universities technical universities,
Colleges of Education) under GTEC
must not go beyond the 15% threshold.
The Union together with its affiliate Unions such as the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), and all the Blocs are united in the fight against the high charges.
An earlier press release by the Union outlined the consensus agreement with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
