President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo - Addo has exonerated chairman Wontumi’s Akonta Mining Company Limited from any wrongdoing, stressing that the company is not involved in any illegal mining activity anywhere in the country.
The Company was cited for engaging in galamsey in 2022, when it was caught operating in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve with a license and permit.
When the attention of the Lands and Natural Resource Ministry was drawn to its activities, the Sector Minister, Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor in a letter ordered the company to immediately stop its operations.
Speaking at an event organized by the Ghana Catholic Diocesan Priests Association in Koforidua today in the Eastern Region where the issue came up, President Akufo - Addo provided an update on the reported illegal mining activities of Akonta Mining Company Limited.
According to the President, the mining company as of now is not engaged in any illegal mining in any part of the country.
The President further disclosed that his government is keen on ridding the country of all illegal mining activities and remains in the fight against galamsey.
