A Private legal practitioner, Lawyer Rockson Tabiri has advocated for the Ghanaian citizens to elect their Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
According to him, the 1992 constitution grants the President the power to appoint all MMDCEs, but he explained sovereignty must truly reside in the people.
Lawyer Tabiri stressed that the elections of the MMDCEs would also ensure accountability and performance at the local level.
Currently, the President nominates all MMDCEs for confirmation by their Assemblies.
In 2019, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo began processes to carry out referendum on election of MMDCEs on partisan basis, which was cancelled at the eleventh hour due to lack of consensus.
Ghana marked 7th January as a constitution day, meanwhile some residents of Tamale demonstrated on the day to demand reforms in the constitution.
Speaking on Sompa 98.9FM's Me Man Nti political show Saturday January 7 he said, "All MMDCEs are appointees of the government and not elected by the people and if they are not performing the people have no power to remove them.”
Mr Tabiri appealed to the President to rekindle the efforts to grant power to the people to elect their leaders in the local governance.
