Market tolls collected from at the various night and weekend markets contributed significantly to the revenue generation of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly in 2022, Mr John Ansu Kumi, the Municipal Chief Executive has said.
Last year, he said the Assembly generated GHC3,158,562.13 revenue, and commended markets women and tax payers for paying their taxes.
He said though the Assembly could not meet its approved revenue target of GHC3,546,441 for the year, the amount generated was encouraging and commended the revenue collectors for their commitment as well.
Speaking in an interview with Sompa FM in Sunyani, Mr Kumi said the revenue collected comprised permit fees and market tolls, rates, taxes and sanitation fees, saying the “in fact assembly generated a lot of revenue from the night and weekend markets”.
The MCE the Assembly developed a Revenue Improvement Action Plan that guided the Assembly in its revenue generation, saying through the plan, the assembly was able to identify new sectors and cash in accordingly.
Mr Kumi indicated that the Assembly increased its revenue collectors and extended its revenue collection at the nights and weekends markets in the municipality, saying the “pay as you dump’ sanitation policy also contributed significantly.
He said property rates, market tolls, and permits were the major sources of the assembly’s revenue mobilization, and advised market women, traders, food vendors, landlords and all taxpayers to honour their tax obligations to enable the assembly to generate the needed revenue required for development.
This is the surest way the assembly could tackle the immediate needs of the people and provide essential services as well, Mr Kumi added.
