Tax analyst and lawyer, Timore Francis Boi has said there should be a systematic approach to collect taxes from Christians to help build the National Cathedral having proposed a 10 percent tax levy on churches to help build the national cathedral.
In a conversation with Sompa TV on Thursday, January 19th, 2023,
Mr. Timore said even though the vision to build a national cathedral was an individual promise by the president, the place allocated to build the cathedral is a national asset, and considering how the place has deteriorated while there's no money for the immediate construction, he suggests that there should be a 10 percent tax levy on churches to pay for the construction of the cathedral.
“We have been told it's a national cathedral for churches (Christians) if so then I suggest the government impose some tax levy on the churches for the next 5 years so that we can construct the cathedral, I don't think we should go to Muslims for such taxes it won't be fair, Nehemiah said, let's build a church for God, so I think Christians and the churches should do that to help build this cathedral’ he said.
According to him, the payment structure of the tax levy should be based on the branches of the church's returns and not the headquarters.
“Every church that has more than 500 members must pay 10 percent of the church returns, from 100 to 500 should be 5 percent and this should be done by the district assemblies and Ghana revenue, and since they are Christians, I believe they will not lie, so we can make arrangements for them to pay on monthly basis or quarterly.
He said it will be incumbent upon the district assemblies to record the number of churches within their enclave for the pastors to prepare the accounts for the national cathedral trustees’ he added.
