The Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, today donated 100 hospital beds and mattresses valued at Ghc 330,000.00 to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The donation comes on the heels of his payments of147,000.00 United States Dollars being the one year Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) cost for the Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine used for the treatment of cancer patients at the hospital.
At the welcoming reception held at the hospital’s Oncology Directorate conference room the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, acknowledged with gratitude the generous support Hon. Agyapong had been extending to the hospital since last year.
” As a hospital, we receive referrals from 12 out of the 16 regions in the country and do not have the liberty of turning away patients unlike the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, 37 Military Hospital and similar facilities in Accra. These kind of donations to the hospital, therefore, go a long way to help cope with these pressures”, he stated.
Prof. Addai-Mensah appealed to Hon. Agyapong to use his extensive contacts in the business circles to mobilise funds for the comprehensive renovation of the old GEE blocks at the hospital which had not witnessed any major repairs since their construction in 1955.
“This hospital has the honour of appointing you as its Advocate General so that you can use your connections in the business community and the private sector to seek for financial and material support for upgrading and even expanding facilities here to help meet the growing needs of its patients”, he announced.
Hon. Agyapong added that “KATH has been a hospital that I have visited many times since 1968 and also as a referral centre for Assin Central, so coming here to give these kind donations is appropriate and in order”.
He explained with the help of friends and some members of the public, a fundraising exercise was initiated by him which yielded GH₵97,000 which he topped it up to procure the hospital beds and mattresses for the hospital to help address the “no bed syndrome” and improve in-patient care.
As part of his visit to the hospital, Hon. Agyapong and his team accompanied by the KATH CEO undertook a tour of the Oncology Directorate, the old GEE blocks and the Accident and Emergency (A&E) centre to interact with patients and learn at first hand some of the challenges confronting the hospital.
The Director of Nursing Services, Ms. Georgina Afua Sam, on behalf of management thanked Hon. Member of parliament for his kind gesture and asked for more of such donations.
