The Chaplaincy Unit of the Ghana Prisons Service has held a three-day annual conference at the Anglican Retreat Center in Ashale Botwe, Accra.
The conference which began from the 1st to the 3rd of March, 2023 welcomed 18 service chaplains, 3 service Imams and 44 chaplaincy assistants drawn from the 49 prison establishments across the country.
The theme for the conference was "Chaplaincy Support Drive, Offering Ourselves to God as Stewards," and had a pattern of devotions, morning and afternoon sessions, report reading and discussions.
The Director General of Prisons (DGP.) Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir was represented by the Director of Prisons in charge of Technical, Dr. Francis Omane-Addo.
Dr. Omane-Addo emphasized the need for all chaplains and Imams to be good stewards.
He also entreated all delegates present to seek the will of God in everything they do.
The Director of Prisons in charge of Services, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq) in her presentation stated that the work of prison officers is more spiritual than physical and the chaplains are therefore supposed to be the eyes and spiritual covers of the stations.
The Chaplain General of the Ghana Prisons Service, ADP. Rev. Canon S.S Adama Okai in his closing remarks prayed earnestly for all the delegates and asked God to strengthen and grease their elbows to fit and satisfy the requirements as chaplains, Imams and chaplaincy assistants.
Also present at the conference were the Director of Prisons in charge of Welfare; Mrs. Joana Fofo Tackie-Otoo, the former Chaplain General of Prisons; ADP. Gabriel Kwesi Danquah who represented former Chaplain Generals, the Director-General of Religious Affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces; Rev Commodore Paul Adjei Djan, and the Chaplain General of the Ghana National Fire Service; Rev. DO III Erzoah Amihere.
The rest were a Commissioner of Police (Rtd); Rev.Dr. Ampah Bening, Elder Justice Osei, Right Rev.Dr. Goerge K. Neequaye and Rev. Fosu Hinneh who also represented volunteer chaplains.
