As part of the 2023 International Women’s Day (IWD) which is celebrated on March 8 every year across the world, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) organized an event to mark the celebration in Accra.
IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. On this day, significant activities are organised worldwide to celebrate women’s achievements and rally for women’s equality.
The celebration, which was on the theme, “Digit ALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”, aimed at educating participants on the continuous struggle for equality, gender bias, and the need to eliminate discrimination and create knowledge sharing opportunities for both male and female officers of GIS. It also afforded officers to gain new perspectives on gender issues.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, Mrs. Adelaide Anno-Kumi, noted that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a potent force in the transformation of social, economic, and political life globally.
She said ICT has come to stay and that it is a pivot around which development revolves amongst nations, communities and regions. She added that ICT can be an important tool in meeting women’s basic needs and can provide access to resources which can liberate women from poverty.
Mrs Anno-Kumi urged Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Government Departments to plan training programmes, to provide the required skills and establish groups for follow-up action just as the GIS is doing with the Gender Mainstreaming Unit in the Service.
The Chief Director commended the Comptroller-General of Immigration and his Management team, as well as the European Union (EU) and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) for the support in organising the event under the Strengthening Border Security in Ghana (SBS Ghana) project.
In attendance were some students of Accra Girls Senior High School, Presbyterian Senior High Schools, Akropong and security services among others.
