The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has petition Parliament's committee of education over the capping and delayed of GETfund by the finance ministry.
Presenting the petition, the president of the union Dennis Appiah Larbi- Ampofo stated that the capping of GETfund is a matter of deliberate attempt to deprive student of this country the necessary funds needed to run education.
He explained that, “in 2019 a total of Gh¢ 1.8 billion was allocated to the GETfund out of that only I.2 billion was released. In 2021 an amount of Gh¢2.3 billion was allocation made but only Gh¢1.4 billion was accrued to GETFund. In 2020 an amount of GH¢ 2 billion only 1.2 billion was accrued to GETFund of which he stated that it’s affecting education system in the country and describe it as unfortunate.”
The union called on the education committee of Parliament as a matter of urgency to address the issue of GETfund capping and reject the proposed formula for the distribution of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund) for the 2023 Year.
The chairman of the education committee and MP for Fanteakwa North, Kwabena Asiamah Amankwa who received the petition stated that GETfund is meant to develop education, therefore it's not right to cap such funds.
He indicated that since education is expensive, the committee will do everything possible to ensure the funds are used for education in the country.
