The Chairman of the eighteen-member constitutional, legal, and parliamentary affairs committee of Parliament, Hon Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi has clarified that the passing of the Anti-LGBT Bill has not been delayed as widely speculated.
The Bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, was presented to Speaker, Alban Bagbin on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. The Minority in parliament accused the Committee of deliberately delaying work on the Bill and threatened to block the passage of government Bills if the anti-LGBT Bill was not worked on speedily.
In an interview with Omanhene Yaw Adu Boakye, host of Sompa TV's Adea Akye Abiaa show on Wednesday Hon Kwame Anyimadu pleaded with citizens to exercise patience with the committee.
"The constitutional, legal, and parliamentary affairs committee is still working on the Anti-Gay Bill. We are eliminating all elements that contradict the constitution. Hence, we implore Ghanaians to remain calm", he stated.
The proposed legislation which aims to provide for proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values seeks to restrict LGBTQ+ communities and any activities related to them.
The new Bill would go much further, criminalizing the promotion and funding of LGBTQ+ activities as well as public displays of affection, cross-dressing and more, while campaigning for LGBTQ+ persons on social media or online platforms is also prohibited under the Bill.
The Bill further seeks to provide for protection of and support for children, persons who are victims or accused of LBBTTQQIAAP+ and related activities and other persons and related matters while people advocating the rights of these sexual minorities will also be penalized.
Proponents of the Bill want the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality to be criminalized in the country saying it is a world-class piece of legislation which should be a reference material for other Parliaments seeking to pass similar legislation.
The memorandum accompanying the Bill said the object of the Bill is to provide for proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, proscribe LGBTQ+ and related activities, propaganda of, advocacy for or promotion of LGBTTQQIAAP+ and related activities.
