The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called out Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani to voluntarily resign from the Electoral Commission.
The two, whose names have been called out by the election observer group, were appointed by President Akufo-Addo in March this year to be part of the board members of the electoral commission.
The appointment of Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani was greeted with a lot of controversy, with the leading opposition party, the New Democratic Congress (NDC), labeling them as members of the NPP.
At a press conference organized by CODEO in Accra on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, Rev. Dr. Fred Degbey, who is a member of the group, said the newly elected members should resign to protect Ghana’s democracy and the credibility of our elections.
“We are painfully aware that voluntary and constitutionally grounded revocation of these unfortunate and democratically problematic EC appointments by the President is extremely unlikely.
However, nothing stops the affected appointees, namely Dr Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani from voluntarily and honourably resigning from membership of the EC.
“This will be in the supreme interest of our country’s continued democratic progress, election peace and credibility and indeed overall national interest,” he added.
