Hon. George Mireku Duker - MP, Tarkwa-Nsuaem, the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources says the rebound story of Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited fills him with pride and gratification as an ideal example of the commitment of H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration to the mining sector.
According to him, government can share in the success stories of Sankofa Gold as it played an essential role in the resuscitation of the firm.
Speaking during a working visit to the firm on behalf of the Sector Minister on Thursday, 06 April 2023, Hon. Mireku Duker said he was elated to have learnt that the company through the help of government has bounced back from its initial struggles.
“Sankofa happens to be one of the enviable processing companies being spearheaded by the GNPC. Fortunately for me I know the nuances you’ve gone through having served as Vice Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Mines and Energy. I want to commend you for what you’ve done and gotten to so far."
“Just before 2017, the operational level of this company wasn’t palatable at all. Government had to come in. This government has been able to bring back this company and we are proud to have being operational. We have that intellectual agility to restore the operationalization of mining companies,”.
The Deputy Minister added that his visit forms part of a hands-on approach adopted by the Ministry to ensure that it has first hand experiences on all issues happening in the mining sector.
He added that the visit will help him appreciate the challenges and strengths of the firm and how the challenges can be mitigated to enhance employment and revenue generation.
He restated the commitment of the government to creating the enabling environment for mining firms to thrive.
Hon. Mireku Duker charged the company and other mining firms to invent a communication plan through which their imperious contribution to the country will be told.
The General Manager of Sankofa Gold Mines, Mr. Justice Acquah provided an outlined the core task of the objective which is the processing of gold.
He enumerated some major projects the company have undertaken in the Prestea area and disclosed that the company provides direct employment to 300 Ghanaians with 1000 others being employed indirectly.
